Funding magnet schools transportation

Interesting situation the Guilford County Board of Education pondered at last night’s meeting—- how to fund transportation to magnet schools* after Title I money dries up due to the phaseout of NCLB sanctions. Of course the option of cutting off transportation the magnet schools altogether is always there, but board chairman Alan Duncan said “that is very troubling to me from an equity standpoint.”

*My source inside Jones Elementary tells me there’s a rumor going around that if Mitt Romney wins the election, he’s going to close magnet schools.

How does Alan Duncan believe that Mitt Romney could close magnet schools? Aren’t those schools funded by the state and locally? It may accurate to say that Romney would scale back federal funding of public schools, but they are not really a federal responsibility. The BoE complains all of the time about federal mandates, such as NCLB, but they surely are ready to accept federal funds. What they need to understand is that if you take their money, they can name the tune that you dance to. Grow up, school board. Stop relying on federal funds, and become more efficient and effective with your state and local money. Someone once said that public schools should learn to do less with more. That means do the fundamentals of education and use the money you have to do that well.

I didn’t say Alan Duncan believes Romney will close magnet schools, Stormy. However, my fourth-grader at Jones brought home that rumor…it was meant to be funny, but perhaps I’m not as funny as Roch thinks I am…

My bad for reading into your comments something that was not there. But, where did that rumor get started? Certainly your fourth-grader did not make it up. How would that rumor been intended to be funny? I do not get it.

You’re right, Stormy, my fourth-grader heard it from somewhere —another student — but that student got it from somewhere. Though we’re talking about kids here, adults spread crazy political notions as well.
