Flaunting G’boro’s panhandling ordinance

During my run last evening I saw a panhandler —fully permitted — on the corner of Wendover Avenue and Cridland Drive. It wasn’t my buddy the unemployed archaeologist —-quit seeing him real soon after the Greensboro City Council passed its panhandling ordinance.

It’s a busy corner, with a Kangaroo gas station and a Dunkin Donuts. Cop stereotypes aside, it’s not unusual to see a couple of police cars parked in the lot.

So it’s a pretty blatant violation of the panhandling ordinance, unless of course panhandlers now know that the ACLU has their back.

Did you pass him another tenner to make his trip to the ABC store worthwhile?

Aside from the fact that some panhandlers are legitimate(?), where was this one violating the ordinance? Is there an ATM inside the Kangaroo? As far as I can remember, there’s no highway ramp within 1,000 feet…

I’m quite grateful that I, myself have employment that pays me enough (though it seems barely enough, sometimes) to keep me from having to rely on the kindness of strangers. I wonder though, was this person an employee of a Darden corporation restaurant?

Fair enough piedmonster. It wasn’t my buddy, but this morning I saw him headed that way. Perhaps word has spread.

Like I told Council, Passing laws you cannot enforce is tantamount to having no laws at all.

Not to be too picky but, does the beggar flaunt a law in this instance or more appropriately does the miscreant flout the law? The pan handler may flaunt his hand-lettered billboard begging for alms, but in doing so he flouts a law against such activity.

    Words mean something.
