This fits right in with the Rhode Island pension crisis in the sense that it’s just the way gov’t works.
Greensboro interim City Manager Denise Turner Roth gets a nice raise to go along with her temporary title. The obvious question is whether or not Roth’s salary will be reduced accordingly if she does get the job permanently. I think we know the answer to that question.
The Rhino reports council member Danny Thompson and Mayor Bill Knight —”both running for reelection as conservatives, didn’t comment on why they thought it was necessary to give Roth a $38,000 a year raise to be interim city manager.”
Sigh.

You can always be generous when you are playing with house (taxpayer) money. No, Turner’s salary will not be lowered when a permanent manager is selected. Organizations that have to make a profit would have given Turner a bonus to compensate for the additional responsibility. If handled as a bonus, it does not permanently increase the interim employee’s wage basis as does a raise. This is the same manner in which the two interim school employees were handled, when Grier left, as I recall, so it must be par for the course for government. Does anyone wonder why government costs more every year?

BTW, who was the winner here? Turner gets a $38,000 raise to become interim manager and stay in Greensboro, and Young gets $60,000 and has to move and buy a house and live in NoVa.

Like I said Stormy, it ties in with R.I.’s pension crisis. It’s not the same, except when it’s the same.

It blew my mind when I saw that the assistant city manager was getting ANY raise to take over for the city manager on an interim basis. I would have thought this would be one of the assumed duties of an assistant manager position in any department.

It’s government work, noirhound, your assumption does not apply.
