I assume —- based on what I read elsewhere — that today was Sarah Beth Jones’ last N&R column, unless she agrees to contribute for nothing.

Interestingly enough, Jones writes that newspapers are going through a time of transition:

The question being asked across the board is: Will local daily newspapers remain relevant much longer?

Bill Snider, who spent two decades as editor of what was then the Greensboro Daily News, thinks the question is a little overblown. “I think newspapers will find their niche the way radio did after TV came in.”

The latest incarnaton of that niche is conservative talk radio. But —- gasp —– many radio stations abandoned their mission to protect the family in the process. Perhaps Paul Krugman should get a radio show —- then you’d really see radio in transition.

But I digress. I couldn’t help but notice that editorial assistant Janice Carmac’s family-oriented column, which formerly ran in the Life section, appeared on today’s op-ed page. Again I have to wonder if this is temporary filler or a permanent move.

The N&R — indeed a newspaper in transition.
