Republicans cut deal on RJA override?

The N&R’s Mark Binker writes up House Republicans’ early —and I mean early —morning session to override gubernatorial vetoes.

Legislators adjourned until February without an override of the Racial Justice Act. However, Binker speculates that Republican leaders secured the votes of two conservative Democrats to override the governor’s veto of the NCAE check off bill— which prevents the teachers’ union from drawing dues from members’ paychecks— in exchange for punting the RJA override.

Democrats were still upset with the early morning session, with Sen. Martin Nesbitt saying he’d “never seen anything like this” and Rep. Rick Glazier calling it a “sham and a shame.”

Again if you think the RJA won’t potentially put death row inmates on the streets, think twice.

War Memorial Auditorium renovation?

Greensboro Mayor Robbie Perkins says War Memorial Auditorium will be paid off this year. Now the question is whether or renovate the 52-year-old building at a cost of $60 million.

Two bond referendums to to renovate or rebuild the auditorium have failed, and City Council member Zack Matheny told the Rhino he’d “be cautious about using certificates of participation, and that $60 million seems like an aggressive number.”
